Mr Malcolm G Brown qualified from Queen's University of Belfast in 1981, following his Pre-Registration House Officer year in the Royal Victoria Hospital, Belfast he entered surgical training within the Northern Ireland Surgical Rotation. After Basic Surgical Training he obtained his fellowship in surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh in 1985. Entering Higher Surgical Training his training has led to expertise in all aspects of the Gastro-intestinal surgery. He also trained in Vascular Surgery with particular interest in venous disease. He spent several years in research in the Department of Surgery, Queen's University, Belfast and completed a thesis in 1993 on the role of the Gastro-Intestinal tract during the trauma response and the effect of various supplementary diets during this response. This research was awarded the ''Purce Medal'' by the Royal Victoria Hospital Research Committee for the most outstanding research in the year 1991. During the latter period of his training he spent a year in Sydney, Australia at the Royal Northshore Hospital where he learnt up-to-date techniques in laparoscopic (keyhole) surgery particularly in relation to the stomach and gallbladder.

In June 1993 he was appointed as Consultant Surgeon to at this time Coleraine and Route Hospital, Ballymoney taking up the post on 31 January 1994 on return from Australia. He has been in post since this time and recently the Coleraine and Route Hospitals have combined into a new build greenfield site hospital in Coleraine called the Causeway Hospital which opened in May 2001.

Since the opening of the New Hospital he has developed day case laparoscopic cholecystectomy to a high level and now over 85% of all patients having laparoscopic cholecystectomy can have this done as a day case. He has an interest in upper gastro-intestinal disease and as part of the Northern Ireland Network in dealing with upper gastro-intestinal cancer and he was one of the Medical Advisors on the committee dealing with development of upper gastro-intestinal cancers within Northern Ireland. He is also a member of the Multi-Disciplinary Colorectal group and has a wide expertise in Vascular diseases. He has a special interest in venous disease and also carries out subfascial endoscopic perforating veins surgery.

The North Coast of Northern Ireland has a significant amount of trauma due to high speed motor vehicle accidents and also injuries around the coast from falls from cliffs. Mr Brown has an extensive knowledge in dealing with trauma. He was also lead Clinician during the Poppy Day Bomb of Enniskillen.

He provides a surgical service relating to all aspects of upper gastro-intestinal disease, hepato biliary disease, lower gastro-intestinal disease, perianal disease, hernias, soft tissue disorders, musculo skeletal disorders, arterial and venous disease.
